Surgical Abortion 5-14 Weeks

A “D&C” abortion procedure, also known as a “1st Trimester Surgical Abortion” is a gentle “in-clinic” procedure used to terminate pregnancies of 5 to 14 weeks. In contrast to the “Non Surgical Abortion” or “Abortion Pill” method, the D&C surgical abortion is performed under the direct supervision of our staff physician and requires only a single visit. Most D&C procedures are completed in a matter of minutes, during which time the patient is completely asleep.

What should I expect at my visit?

The D&C surgical procedure requires an office visit which will last approximately 2-3 hours. Following the initial paperwork, ultrasound, lab work, and pre-op examination, the procedure is performed in a safe and secure operating room by one of our highly skilled and licensed OB/GYN surgeons. If you choose to be asleep for your procedure, general anesthesia is provided under the supervision of a highly trained and licensed CRNA. Following the surgical procedure, the patient is then taken to our general recovery room where licensed nurses and medical assistants monitor patient recovery. Prior to discharge, post-operative instructions, medications, and birth control are provided for continued recovery at home.

Do I need to come in for a follow up appointment?

While a 1st trimester surgical abortion is both very safe and usually effectively completed in one office visit, we routinely request a follow-up visit after your procedure.  It is important that you come in for your follow-up appointment for us to check that the abortion was successful, and also make sure that you do not have any complications .
