Paragard IUD

An intrauterine device (IUD), also known as a intrauterine contraceptive (IUC), is a small, flexible “T” shaped device that is placed inside of the uterus.  These long-acting birth control devices can provide pregnancy prevention for 3-10 years depending on which IUD you choose.  Paragard IUD is small, safe, and highly effective.  IUD’s can be placed during a routine office visit in a matter of minutes.

How Can I get a Paragard IUD?

IUDs must be placed by a trained medical professional during an office visit. The IUD is T-shaped and it is inserted through your cervix with a special placement device. The IUDs have two small strings that can be felt outside of your cervix but inside your vagina. Your health care provided will teach you how to locate these strings. An IUD is most often placed during your period, but can be placed at other times of your cycle (as long as your provider can be sure that you are not pregnant).

Are their risks?

About half the women who choose IUDs experience pain and or cramping during insertion which is usually treated with Ibuprofen (or other NSAID pain medication) or local anesthesia. IUDs may cause spotting and cramping for three to six months. Approximately 5% of women may spontaneously expel the IUD. A rare but serious side effect of an IUD is perforation of the uterus. Perforation or an embedded IUD can be treated and occurs in less than 1 out of 1000 insertions.

What are the benefits of Paragard IUD?

IUDs are over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy and it is a form of contraception that you don’t have to think about every day, month, or even year. IUDs are safe for most women including adolescents who have not yet had children.

Can I take it out early?

Yes, you may request that your provider take out your IUD at any time prior to the removal date. Reasons to take out the device early include; irregular bleeding, unexpected side effects that are intolerable for you, or you decide that you would like to become pregnant. Women can get pregnant right away after removal of an IUD as they return to their normal fertility immediately.
