I’ve had Mirena IUD For about 4 years. When I remove it, can I try getting pregnant? Will I have any problems trying to conceive?

Great question! One of our favorite things about Mirena (and any IUD) is that you return to normal fertility right away when you get it taken out! This means, you can try and get pregnant right away, and there will not be a delay in returning to your natural cycle like with some birth control methods.

While IUDs last for up to 5 – 10 years, you can get your IUD removed at any time and you return to normal fertility right away – you do not need to keep the IUD for as long as it could last for. This is why we recommend an IUD for anyone who wants to delay pregnancy for 1 year or more. You can keep the IUD for the full 5-10 years or get it removed as soon as you decide you want to get pregnant!

● Mirena IUD: up to 5 years
● Kyleena IUD: up to 5 years
● Paragard IUD: up to 10 years

In addition to this great benefit of using an IUD for birth control, here are few more reasons to love them:

● All IUDs are more than 99% effective
● You don’t have to think about them every day, month or even year
● You can get one at no cost if you qualify for FPACT and if you have insurance, it is covered

It is important to remember that while having an IUD or being on birth control will not affect your future fertility, your age unfortunately can. Your fertility naturally decreases as you age, so if you go on birth control or get an IUD when you are 20, and then stop using any birth control or IUD when you are 30, your fertility will naturally be lower at 30 than 20, so it is something to be mindful of when you are planning when you might want to have children.
