Back-to-School Health Checklist: Screenings & Care for College Students

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, which makes it a fitting time to think about back-to-school health more broadly. Students heading back to campus are already sorting out move-in dates, class schedules, and immunization paperwork before the semester starts.

At FPA Women's Health, we see this season as a checkpoint for more than this. It's a natural moment to also talk about cervical cancer screening, STI testing, and birth control, the conversations that are easy to put off but matter just as much as any immunization form.

Your Back-to-School Health Checklist

Use this as a quick run-through before the semester starts:

  • Schedule a cervical cancer screening if one is due.
  • Consider STI testing before the semester starts.
  • Talk through birth control options, including same-day IUD or implant placement, before your schedule fills up.
  • Look into a telehealth visit if getting to campus health services between classes is tough.

Cervical Cancer Screening at FPA Women's Health

While FPA Women's Health does not administer vaccines, we recommend the HPV vaccine when it's a good fit for a patient's age and health history. Our focus is cervical cancer screening: Pap tests and HPV testing when appropriate, along with guidance on prevention.

Screening matters whether or not you've been vaccinated, and it's worth doing even if it feels like one more thing on your list. Regular screening is what catches cell changes early if they happen anyway, so the two work best together. Guidelines generally recommend starting around age 21. If you're due for your first Pap test, or just have questions about timing, we're happy to talk it through, and it's worth getting on the calendar before the semester gets busy.

STI Testing: A Quiet Back-to-School Essential

Starting something new, whether it's a campus, a relationship, or just a different routine, is a good time to add STI testing to your list. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are common, and both can be present with no symptoms at all, so testing is the only way to know for sure rather than waiting to feel something's wrong.

Our STI testing page walks through what's typically tested, what symptoms can look like when they do appear, and how quickly treatment can help once something is caught.

Birth Control Consults Before the Semester Gets Busy

A new school year often means a new schedule, which makes it a good time to get started on a birth control plan rather than sort it out mid-semester. Whether you're just beginning to think through options or ready to switch to something that fits your new routine better, a birth control consult can cover the full range of choices and answer your questions directly.

We know a student's schedule doesn't leave much room for extra pharmacy trips. That's why you can leave your visit with multiple cycles of the pill, patch, or ring, so a refill isn't something you have to think about mid-semester.

If you want something long-lasting and low maintenance for the semester and beyond, ask about the IUD. It's one of our most requested options, and it means years of protection without a daily routine to keep up with. If pain during insertion is a concern, we offer pain-management options, including local numbing, sedation, and full anesthesia, so you can choose what feels right for you. Our IUD insertion guide walks through what to expect with each option, step by step.

Not Heading to Campus Yet?

This checklist is written with college students in mind, but plenty of readers are still in high school. If that's you, our Teen Wellness page is a good, judgment-free place to start. It explains what confidential care looks like now, so you already understand how it works by the time you're managing your own appointments.

Start the Year Ready

A back-to-school checklist should cover more than school supplies. Cervical cancer screening, STI testing, and birth control are all part of the same picture: heading into a new semester informed, protected, and cared for.

At FPA Women's Health, we're here for the part of that checklist that's ours to cover, and we're glad to help point you toward the rest.
