Hormone Replacement Therapy

What is hormone therapy for menopause?

Hormone therapy, also known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), is a medically proven treatment for managing menopause symptoms. As estrogen levels naturally decline during menopause, many patients experience symptoms that affect sleep, comfort, focus, and overall quality of life.

Hormone therapy works by supplementing estrogen, progesterone, or a combination of hormones to restore balance and relieve symptoms. Leading medical organizations recognize hormone therapy as the most effective treatment for moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats.

At FPA Women’s Health, all hormone therapy plans are evidence-based and tailored to each patient’s health history and goals.

What symptoms can hormone therapy treat?

Menopause affects every patient differently, and treatment is never one-size-fits-all. Hormone therapy may help relieve:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances and ongoing fatigue
  • Mood changes, anxiety, or irritability
  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
  • Joint aches and body discomfort
  • Weight changes and low energy
  • Vaginal dryness, burning, or pain with intercourse
  • Urinary urgency or recurrent urinary tract infections related to menopause

Your provider will help determine whether hormone therapy or a non-hormonal option is best for you.

Hormone therapy options at FPA Women’s Health

FPA Women’s Health offers a full range of hormonal and non-hormonal menopause treatment options.

Estrogen therapy

Estrogen is the primary hormone used to treat menopause symptoms. Depending on your needs, estrogen may be prescribed as:

  • Systemic estrogen to treat whole-body symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats
  • Localized, low-dose estrogen to treat vaginal and urinary symptoms when appropriate

Progesterone therapy

Progesterone is required for patients with a uterus who are using estrogen to protect the uterine lining and reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer. Progesterone may be prescribed alone or in combination with estrogen, depending on individual medical history, symptoms, and clinical needs. Treatment decisions are made by your provider to ensure safe and appropriate hormone balance.

At FPA Women’s Health, patients may elect to have a progestin-only intrauterine device (IUD) inserted to protect the uterus while taking exogenous estrogen. If a patient does not wish to use an IUD, she may choose to take an oral progesterone pill at night.

Non-hormonal menopause treatments

For patients who cannot take estrogen or prefer non-hormonal options, FPA Women’s Health offers evidence-based alternatives, including:

  • Progesterone-only therapy when appropriate
  • Non-hormonal medications for hot flashes and night sweats
  • Localized, low-dose therapies for vaginal symptoms
  • Individualized care plans based on clinical assessment and patient preferences

What can I expect at my menopause visit?

Your menopause visit at FPA Women’s Health is comprehensive, supportive, and patient-centered.

During your appointment, your provider will:

  • Review your symptoms and medical history
  • Discuss the benefits and risks of available treatment options
  • Create a personalized treatment plan
  • Provide ongoing follow-up to ensure symptom relief and safety

Hormone therapy plans are regularly re-evaluated as your needs change over time.
