What is telehealth?

Telehealth is the use of today’s technology — smartphones, tablets, laptops — to connect with your health care provider. Telehealth allows you to video chat with your provider during your lunch break, while your child is napping, or between classes when it’s most convenient for you. You simply coordinate a visit with your provider at FPA Women’s Health and video chat remotely.

What are the goals of telehealth?

Telehealth makes health care accessible to you when you can’t physically get to your provider for an in-person visit. Other goals include:

  • Making quality health care accessible to people in rural areas
  • Providing health care to people without transportation
  • Treating people who have limited mobility
  • Providing support for at-home or self-managed treatments

Telehealth also opens up the lines of communication between you and your provider so you can receive personalized health care.

What are the benefits of telehealth appointments?

FPA Women’s Health telehealth services offer many benefits, including:

  • No need to travel to the office
  • See your provder from wherever you are
  • No waiting in urgent care
  • One-on-one consultation with your medical professional
  • Health care when you need it
  • Avoid sitting in a busy waiting room
  • No need for childcare during your appointment
  • Live video conferencing

With telehealth appointments, you don’t have to interrupt your schedule to get the provider's office.

In some cases, telehealth services also allow your provider to monitor such things as your heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs. They may also be able to prescribe medications or recommend home-care therapies via phone or electronically.

How do I schedule a virtual visit with my provider?

If you’re interested in telehealth, ask your FPA Women’s Health care coordinator if a video visit is right for you. If you qualify, they send you an email with a link for your virtual medical visit. Click the link and answer the questions as prompted.

Then, simply click the “Join Visit” button to video chat with your provider or nurse practitioner. During the virtual visit, you can discuss your current health concerns and ask questions about symptoms. A telehealth visit may also help determine if you need to schedule an in-person appointment for an exam and diagnosis.
